The Flash: Episode 1 First reactions… SPOILER ALERT

Let me begin by saying that I am not a comic book expert.  My knowledge and introduction into the wonderful world of comics came from my very magnificent, amazing husband. He is very use to my 100 questions about characters as I watch movies and animated shows with him. He also is kind enough to trust me with  reading a few of his comic books. With that being said I may have very different thoughts about the show than a comic book purist.

This week CW premiered The Flash. The Flash Pilot is awesome.  I am very sorry, while I liked Gotham’s pilot, the flash’s pilot literally ran circles around it! There was action, there was happiness, there was sadness, there is a ton of subtle Easter eggs pointing to future characters, and camo by The Arrow packed into one fun filled hour of television viewing. The special effects on the show are wonderful. The cast is great. The characters are likeable!!! Our show begins with Barry Allen, played by Grant Gustin, introducing himself.

“My name is Barry Allen. I’m the Fastest Man Alive.” The show wonderfully goes into Flash’s origins 14 years in the past with his family.  Look who it is!! John Wesley Shipp, whom played The Flash in a former rendition of the show on CBS in the early 90’s, is now back as Barry’s father Henry Allen.  We see young Allen witness the horrid murder of his mother, which he continues to investigate years later. We even are given a few glimpse of the Reverse-Flash.  Let me interrupt this review really fast and suggest that you watch the animated film “Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox “it offers a really good story about the death of Barry’s mother and it correlates to CW’s series pretty well.  Fast forward to present day we find Allen working as a forensic investigator in Central City.  A reactor in the lab explodes sending bolts of lightning that strike Allen as he works in his lab. Allen becomes comatose for 9 months. He wakes up to discover that the lightning combined with various chemicals in the lab infuse in some way to give him his super-fast speed. On the very first episode The Flash defeats his first Villon, receives his costume, and learn the capacity of his abilities.

Allen’s future love interest, Iris West, is played by gorgeous actress Candice Patton. Yes, CW changed the race of Iris! I am really excited that she is African American. Iris is beautiful, sophisticated, and educated -a character that young girls can look up to and be inspired. I am super excited about this series!
